“I love Haiti. It shapes who you are and gives you that hope. It makes you want to reach out to people. I went there to bless other people, but when I went there, they blessed me—I was changed completely.”
“What moment impacted you the most while in Haiti?”
“They spoke in Creole, so you don’t understand anything that is going on but my youth pastor spoke and he would say something and their pastor would translate it to everyone else. You would see different cultures, different skin, different language, and we still worshiped the same God. ‘Cheve' is hair in Creole and they pulled my hair and would say “CHEVE!” Five kids were chanting “HAIR! HAIR! HAIR!”.
The second year I went, we went to this orphanage and there was a little kid there and we instantly bonded together, he was 6 and so cute, name was Shoulio. We went back the next year and we went to the same orphanage and I was like, “Oh my gosh, I am gonna see this kid and I’m so excited. When I got there, I asked around for this kid and I found him. I was like, “Oh my gosh, here he is. Is he gonna remember me?” He didn’t remember me by looking at me, but then I had my phone and pulled up a picture of us and I showed him. He turned to me and his mouth dropped, eyes were super wide, and he latched on to me. We showed him that we do care and we are not people who just show up every once in a while”
